Finding your way as an Independent Scientologist

This post is placed here as a landing spot for those who have just recently left the Church of Scientology. It contains vital data to help you through the transition to life as an independent person with personal and family goals as opposed to organizational goals.

As an independent Scientologist, you will be exposed to new data on Ron’s life and career, the development of the technology, and an intimate history of the Church that you have never seen before.
You have left an environment where ANY questioning of the Tech, Policy, Management, or Ron causes severe repercussions and have entered this new environment where you are permitted to ask questions and are encouraged to make up your own mind!

Can this shake your stable data? It sure can, especially when you start looking at aspects of the Tech, of the Church itself, and LRH that you have never permitted yourself to see before. For some of you, this can be a bit overwhelming at first.

Just remember that you have left a structured environment where you wore self-imposed blinders and are now free  to observe and comment on your observations.

Do you remember this from the Creed of the Church of Scientology?

We of the Church believe:

That all men have inalienable rights to think freely, to talk freely, to write freely their own opinions and to counter or utter or write upon the opinions of others.

The Church of Scientology does not practice what it preaches. You are only allowed to follow the party line.

As an Independent Scientologist, you are free to follow your own Code of Honor and seek truth.

In this new environment, there are many different viewpoints and you will find a constant stream of discussions about what is true and what is not true.  You will even find some areas of Independent Scientology calling other areas “Squirrels” to hoots of laughter from those who have found many workable solutions to setting beings free.

If  the new data you are being exposed puts you into a confusion, there is a way to find certainty under these conditions and thus map out a course to spiritual freedom that works for you. The solution employs some very basic technology which you can use to sort things out for yourself.

From Introduction to Scientology Ethics we see that Confusion can be defined as any set of factors or circumstances which do not seem to have any immediate solution.

Confusions have pieces. If you were to grasp one piece of the confusion and relate other pieces to what you have grasped, you will soon have mastered the confusion.

If you look at your past and present exposure to Scientology, is there one piece that you have total certainty on?

Use this to align all of the other material you are about to encounter.

For me, it is the absolute certainty that the auditing and ethics technology produce fantastic results when standardly delivered (with the Auditors Code fully in).

Using that certainty, I can now evaluate the importance of LRH’s real life as opposed to the CofS version. I can also evaluate the importance of knowing that Volney Mattheson’s work with his e-meter predated and formed the basis of much that LRH wrote about metered auditing.

Do I care that David Mayo may have developed some of the NOTS material while doing repairs on LRH? Do I care that Jack Parsons studies in Black Magic may have influenced LRH? No!

Does it matter that LRH did not create scientology from scratch and may have adapted the work of others? Not at all!

What I care is that the technology I experienced as a PC and delivered as an auditor for 20 years produces workable and repeatable results in spite of auditing errors, C/Sing errors and arbitraries introduced by management.

We have an opportunity as Independent Scientologists to handle the errors of the past, handle inconsistencies in programming cases, and to explore productive avenues that were deliberately ignored in the past.

Some may wish to preserve Scientology as it was in the Sixties, or Seventies, or even post-GAT. That is their privilege. They probably do not realize that the rigid top-down control of the Tech is history.

We live in a connected world where the market is better informed than the purveyors of services. Wins and failures alike are swiftly exchanged on the Internet. Any group that seeks to help Man had better get used to having their motives and their services questioned and discussed.

Any organization delivering auditing will benefit from PCs sharing their wins and disappointments with others. The groups that will survive will listen to their public and swiftly handle any errors in delivery or in setting expectations.

Unfortunately, the CofS is not doing this and will shortly fade into oblivion like other organizations that tried to control customer communication.

As an individual, you need to investigate the field groups and see what they have to offer. It is already apparent that the entire Bridge is available outside the confines of the CofS and according to reports it is affordable and delivered with great ARC and no crush regging for the IAS or new buildings.

If your experience with the Church of Scientology provided no service that delivered what you needed and wanted, your best bet is to study everything you can find in the field of independent scientologists until you find something you fully agree with and use that to work out any confusions concerning what you want to do with this technology and independent scientology.

If all else fails, ask an experienced Independent Scientologist for advice. I think you will be pleasantly surprised how supportive they are.

If you have any difficulty finding someone to answer your questions please send me an email at [email protected] I will be glad to assist you and can help you through the changes you will experience as a new independent Scientologist.

Good luck!

Incredible post! I think you sum up very well what many people feel but have been too timid to voice. Thanks for putting words to thoughts many of us have.

Can I get an Amen! ? (My southern roots are showing.)
I don’t have the reference to hand where the ol man states what we expect of a scientologist, so I paraphrase: get on the active comm lines and make a difference. I think OldAuditor has something here. And for my own observation, active comm lines are not always theta. But that does not preclude them from containing truth.

Truly. It is the “working” part of Keeping Scientology Working.

Sir Isaac Newton was most certainly a heretic by the standards of his era, and produced more religious writings than scientific ones in his lifetime.

But, gravity is still a force, and putting man made objects in to orbit is largely possible due to his contributions.

Love the blog.

I came into Scientology in March 78′. I originated that I wanted to join staff while I was drilling TR-2 (Communication drill, Training Routine #2 having to do with giving an ecknowledgement). Well, I did join staff before I completed the Communication course but blew from my post as a Comm Course Supe in Jan 79′. Taking advantage of a general amnesty being offered, I returned to the fold in early 80′ with a certainty that walking the path of Scn was better than any of the other paths that I had been walking. And from that point forward I never again manifested any doubts about the workability of the tech.

In 83′ I attested to the state of Clear.

In 84′ I took on the ED post of Narconon. Early 85′ I took over the ED post of a WISE (World Institute of Scientology Enterprises) Office.

In 01′ I moved from Clearwater, FL to a place where there is no Scn and where there are no scientologists. And it has been while I have been in this environment where I have come to really understand my relationship with my religious philosophy as well as my responsibility, as a scientologist, to do whatever I can to help better conditions where I am.

A little over two weeks ago I started looking on the web for data about David Miscavige. The story I had watched on ABC’s Nightline a while back was different than most attacks on the CoS that I had become familiar with over the years. This story really got me to wondering. So, finally I gave in and went to see for myself.

Prior to this action I had never heard about independent scientologists nor had I ever heard the term “free zone.”

Well, I must say that after consuming (not anywhere near digested at this point) a great deal of information and opinions from multiple viewpoints, I have cognited that it was in 85′ after the Battle of Portland, that I became an independent scientologist without realizing that that was what I had done. However, for my own protection, I worked hard to keep that independent thought under wraps but it just leaking through.

Old Auditor, you are so right. Entering this world of independent scientologists can do a number on your accumulated stable datums. I greatly appreciate your writing this post. It is a veritable “Care For It” action. Thank you very much.

WHAT you believe anymore. Thanks for this. It’s really nice of you to care enough to put this blog here.

Just read your article for the second time Old Auditor. It’s a great read! Even better the second time.

You know, I’ve discovered over the years that just being in high ARC and granting beingness, without even applying an technique, is itself tremendously powerful. Life blooms in the presence of high ARC!

Thank you Old Auditor for doing what you are doing here. I very much appreciate your blogs.

If you go to my page, http://scnstories.ning.com/profile/MonteSmith a song will begin to play. This song, IMHO, could serve as an appropriate theme song for your blogs.

David from England  on January 5th, 2010

Old Auditor,
I have long been aware of the gap in pereception between those who have been active in Scientology and have now become critical of some or many of its practices and those who were never active or just fleetingly so (like myself). I read these blogs carefully, and I can sense a massive shift occuring thanks largely to the likes of yourself and Marty, who are not prepared to denounce everything they once did. I can also tell that this is hard for some outsiders to deal with, as we have seen with some of the Anon feedback.

Tell me, is there anywhere where the recently departed have looked at the more moderate critiques of the non-Miscavage period? I include here books like Joseph Winter’s Doctors Report on Dianetics, Roy Wallis’s Road to Total Freedom and (perhaps most importanly) Harriet Whitehead’s Renunciation and Reformulation: A Study of Conversion in an American Sect.

These tend to avoid the shock-horror aspect of any critique of the church while attempting to place it and its teachings within a scientific and critical framework. I think that until books like these can be freely discussed within the independent network, our conversations may well be somewhat limited…

P. Henry  on January 5th, 2010

David from England, excellent point! Thank you.

After reading one of your posts I continue and had completed your entire site! :)

I blow charge too as in auditing, fantastic!

Then solved one problem with ARC after your ARC series and everything is fine now but it amazes me putting mental pictures so others can perceive it, simply incredible!

Thank you very much for posting! I like this comm line.

OldAuditor  on January 10th, 2010

Otto, thank you for your comments.
I created this site to help rehabilitate and inspire people,
especially those who have been given wrong indications in the past.
I am pleased to see that it is helping those who visit.

I will be setting up an independent practice soon and this site
and these stories are my way of helping others in the meantime.
There will be more… :)

David,

In all the chatter going on about the future of the Church, this analysis of yours stands out as a spot-on, exterior look at the situation. The Church will probably continue, but as a cinder of its former self, while the Freezone and open-source Scientology will adapt and flourish.

It’s not just a coincidence that natural systems are usually based on networks. There are examples of authoritarian or hierarchal behavior on a small scale, such as the alpha pair in a wolf pack or the pecking order in a flock of chickens, but a whole healthy ecosystem is a network where all of the elements are in a state of connection and response to the other elements.

The Internet is helping to bring human society into a more natural state, and in my opinion open-source Scientology will benefit from, and contribute to, that transition.

MostlyLurker  on April 12th, 2010

Spot On! I have so much bypassed charge and it takes much energy to suppress and squash it down and go on living an optimistic and happy-ish life!
This blows so much of that BPC, giving it back to ME so I can move upward and onward.
Now to find my conditions formulas…they’re around here somewhere! ;o)

Melvin,

I do not know of any auditors near Springhill, Florida, but I am sure there are independent auditors delivering standard tech elsewhere in Florida.

You might want to place that question on some of the sites listed in the tight side bar such as the Pro-LRH Tech Community.

Well I do care that some myths that LRH did it all by himself and is some kind of God are put to rest. As well as the rightfully atributing acomplishements the the right persons. I am glad that is beginning to materialize.

avox  on January 14th, 2011

I was given some LRH original books by an old auditor who had trained under Ron at St Hill in ’62, books had been printed with St H address too. She was a magic auditor I can tell you….am so grateful. In those books LRH had a listed many philosophers and thinkers, and attributed much of what he had sorted out to them, saying no-one could do it all in one lifetime. Fair comment. He also in his lectures acknowledged that he was learning new all the time, and getting lots right and the occasional thing “wrong” or needing fine tuning. Honest? Yep. Anyone who knows decent folk who worked with Ron personally will have good reports to share.I have met several and their eyes glow with joy when I ask them to recount a tale or two about their times with Ron.
More recently a declared “SP” (hoho…SP my foot!) said he believed that the best Rundown of all was the (post LRH’s demise) “Leaving Scientolgy (Ch of DM) Rundown”. There is a deep truth in that.
Integrity. Communication. ARC. KRC. and Keeping Basics”In” – these things always work.
And remembering that here on Earth we are each a spiritual being having a human experience !
(NOT the other way round !)

fg  on October 18th, 2011

What you say is very well covered on the data series when LRH talk about those shops whose stats were going down after renovations. Introducing an unnecessary change, like interrupting a BD with a new command. DM is a wog, a complete wog!

thegreatestjoyinlife  on December 28th, 2011

Yes I would like to be a part of this group. I got into SCN when i was 18 and am now 58. I am clear but wow, I started noticing things did not seem quite right since about 1988 0r 1999. Any way, as time went on and i keep paying for service and donating to events and thinking this is really messed up. What i always thought was super strange was when everyone bought into David Mayo being declared, including myself but I had been off lines for many years just trying to get back on so ya know how that goes. Still I thought i can’t believe that these people are really buying this. Makes absolutly no sense that the man who discovered the S.p. Tech appointed an S.P. as his right hand man. After watching a vidio of David Mayo I knew instantly he was not an S.P. Miskovich on the other hand just has always made my skin crawl. Ya know just an instant dislike. Saw him on a talk show and could not believe it his TR’s were out all over the place. Then the experiences I have had with the church over the last 3 years or so Made me say to myuself “Wow this is really scarey, this is so messed up i am not even sure if we or LRH can come back and call it Scientology any more. We might have to completly re-name it. I could go on and on but i did not come to your site without knowiung for certain through my own observation that the original LRH Tech is no longer in the ORGS. I also remember LRH saying if it dosen’t work then it’s not Scientology no matter what anyone says, it’s just not standard tech if it dosen’t work. I would really like to find a way I can help.

MarkW  on February 2nd, 2012

Thanks David, for everything. This blog is wonderful.

Overall  on February 25th, 2012

Excellent post. Thank you.

I don’t care if David Mayo helped develop NOTS and about LRH’s life. But I do care that he lied about it or if I want to be more kind, exaggerated. I have heard lectures where he referred to himself as a nuclear physicist. I don’t care whether he was or wasn’t, but I care that he said he was when he wasn’t.
I care that he said he never took any money from the Church when so many reports say that he did. On that point we may never know the truth.
I care that the Church lied about his war record and so many, mnay things including the library projects and things we probably don’t even know about. I could go on and on but I won’t.
I just want to say that all this lying/misrepresentation/exaggerating makes me very mistrustful. It was done by LRH and is done in spades by the Church.
Dishonesty does matter to me.
Don’t get me wrong. I still think auditing is amazing and training is very helpful.
I guess I just don’t get it. If anyone out there can explain it to me, I would appreciate it.

Overall – It’s called Madison Avenue Advertising. Did you really think Head and Shoulders would get you that girl wearing your pajama top? Do you really think the Celebrex couple put their bathtubs on the beach? That news media keep you well informed? Have you ever followed politicians’ actions as contrasted to their campaign promises? Put things in context, laugh a little, and keep your eye on the content, not the packaging. Don’t try to single out LRH for perfection – you’ll just end up making an enemy of yourself.

OldAuditor  on March 1st, 2012

I suggest that you read everything with the idea that new knowledge will not hurt you. It may, however, shake your stable datums.

Those who cannot examine their stable datums will continue to be the effect of them even though circumstances have changed.

If there is one thing I hope to bring about with this website, it is to encourage you to exercise your power of choice. If you regain your power of choice, you will be superior to most OTs and staff members of the current Church of Scientology.

They cannot afford to exercise their power of choice and to that extent they are still enslaved by their indoctrination

OldAuditor  on July 10th, 2012

Dee, It is far easier to confront the abstract ideas of peace and harmony than it is to face the truth about a situation.

The idea of us joining hands and singing together as one family of man has enthralled folks for years. If we can only turn a blind eye to injustice and abuses of basic human rights, we can probably all get along. The executives of the Church of Scientology who have been residing in the “SP Hole” for the past five years are still trying to work that one out satisfactorily. They have been working from within to reform the church and it does not appear that they have made much progress.

On the other hand, if we can calmly and courageously discuss the injustices in a situation, we can probably start a dialog which may lead to resolution of the issues. We support your right to espouse a truce between the COS and the Independent field. To show your sincerity, would it be too much to ask if you have discussed this with your local Ethics Officer and/or OSA representative?

We would like to hear what their response was.

Dee,

If anyone is going to get this rolling, it will be someone with your qualifications. However, if you were in good standing with the Church, you may be unpleasantly surprised by the reaction to your email.

When you say you would like to get friends and family on the Bridge, are you implying that you would be willing for them to experience the upset and abuse that Scientology, Inc. provides?
If so, I wonder if you have been in touch with any HGC in the last 5 years.

Do you understand what the arbitrary 3-swing F/N has done to invalidate pcs and auditors?
Many of my repairs are to handle the invalidation of current Scientology, Inc. auditing practices.

If you are trying to ensure that your friends get standard tech as LRH intended, you need to get in comm with field groups like Life Enhancement Center of Coeur d’Alene http://www.LifeEnhance.org which deliver standard tech with stunning results as LRH intended.

I wish you luck with your efforts, but my experience leads me to believe that you have opened Pandora’s Box with your email suggestion.

Please let me know if you need my assistance or would like to discuss this privately.

If I may add my viewpoint on LRH, please.

I started a business some time back that was a total failure, I then started another that is successful mainly from learning from my mistakes in the first and was able to use all this data in my second business.

Will we take note of a guy teaching you how to handle your kids if he did not have children of his own?

If LRH did not have engrams and did not dramatize them (just like all of us do/did), would he have been able to create Dianetics? How do you fix something you do not have experience with yourself?

If his first and second marriage were not a disaster, would he have been able to create tech to handle the 2D? How do you create cures if you have never seen the illnesses yourself?

If he did not have his own ethics problems would he have been able to create the ethics series? Without ethical problems of his own how would he have been able to recognise the damage it creates and then decide to do something about it?

How can you really know the tone scale if you did not experience each of the tones yourself?

I can go on but I am sure you get the picture.

I say, thanks God for all his shortcomings. Without that would he have been able to create the tech?

Nope, LRH were no Jesus but nevertheless a great man that saved and improved the lives of many, more than any other man I know that walked this earth.

He had his shortcomings and troubles (and maybe even had more than some of us) but the tech he created outweigh those shortcomings for me.

Its funny but I never thought of LRH as a God but I did and do admire his dedication and results.
His work and his results is what is important.

Why worry about his sins? Lets worry about our own sins and handle that with the tech created by LRH who himself were a sinner and thus one of us.

joemach  on March 28th, 2013

This is such a cool platform for all of us now to be able to be in comm. I am still under the radar and slightly tipping over to the standard tech side of the fence. Yet I feel more camaraderie with the independents than I do with the church or any of its members and I was in it for 30 years. I feel like this is where I belong. This is what LRH intended the tech for. Remember Book One or the interview with Tony Hitchman? It was for the common man in the street. I think this is just what the doctor [Hubbard] ordered.

I really like your site. Seen some before and most links I found from elsewhere. Whatever, you seem to have a complete list of all sites. I didn’t notice Geir Isenes here yet, tho it is one of my regulars, along with Mike Rinder’s and Tony Ortega, tho watch some others too.
I don’t consider myself a scientologist any longer and didn’t for 30 years until I went back in for a year and saw the changes, and am now a Special Person because I spoke out. I would however like to see drastic changes occur within the organization and the leadership change. Making it available so as to believe what they want, without the suppression, lies, abuses and OSA control. Whatever that takes is my personal main goal. I do thank you for helping people that want or need it.
